Sentence Mechanics

The Formula

WH Word + Helping Verb + Subject + Main Verb?

Where do you live?
Why are you sad?
When did he come?
What is your name?

💡 Teacher Tip: The "Verb Bridge"

Students often skip the helping verb (e.g., "Where you live?"). Explain that the helping verb acts as a bridge between the WH-word and the subject—you can't cross without it!

The Extensions of "How"

  • How much Price / Amount
  • How many Number
  • How often Frequency
  • How far Distance
  • How long Duration

• "How many students are there?"

• "How much is this?"

• "How often do you exercise?"
